Guatemala's Fuego volcano erupted unexpectedly on Sunday, killing at least 38 people, injuring dozens more, and burying nearby homes in ash. Thousands are continuing to evacuate the area.
Fuego volcano is located approximately 10 miles west of Antigua, Guatemala. Effects of the eruption spanned a 12 mile radius of the volcano. Some ash drifted 25 miles away to Guatemala City, resulting in temporary closing of the country's international airport. The volcano erupted for 16 and a half hours, the BBC writes.
Citizens have been warned against pyroclastic flows, which are dangerous, fast-moving mixtures of gas and volcanic material, such as pumice and ash. Pyroclastic flows pose a threat to citizens and their homes downrange of the volcano.
